Pet Transport and Food/Medication Delivery
Frontier Pet Clinic is extremely happy to announce a brand new
service that we are now offering to our clients! The clinic
has purchased a company vehicle for your convenience. We now
offer a transport service so clients can have their pets brought
into the clinic for an exam and then returned home, when you
are unable to bring them in for an appointment. This service
also comes in handy if your pet becomes suddenly ill and you
are unable to bring in your pet. We have also introduced a delivery
service for prescription diets and medications, so that you
can spend your free time doing more enjoyable things, and leave
the driving to us!!!!
Digital
Radiography Unit
We are proud to offer a very new technology in veterinary medicine!!!
Digital x-rays are the wave of the future in both human and
animal health. They have been in use for the past 3-5 years
in most larger human hospitals. This x-ray unit allows us to
take an x-ray of your pet onto a digital plate, and then process
it through a digital scanner. The "x-ray" image then
appears on a computer monitor and can be modified in many ways
in order to view the most information on your pet's condition.
With standard x-rays, no modification is possible since it is
on an actual film, and if the x-ray exposure is not set exactly
right, retakes must be done, exposing your pet to more radiation
than necessary. With digital x-rays, there are no retakes, no
chemicals to process films, less radiation exposure, and we
are able to review your pet's x-ray images with you in our special
consult room with a large computer monitor. We can able send
x-ray images to a board-certified radiologist for review at
the press of a button! We can always give you copies of your
pet's x-ray images by transferring them to a computer CD. It
is as easy as that!
Toshiba
Ultrasound Machine
Frontier Pet Clinic has purchased a brand new state-of-the-art
ultrasound machine as part of our new diagnostic capabilities.
The ultrasound machine allows us to look into the pet's belly
for anomalies. It is a very effective way of detecting tumors
of the liver, spleen, kidney disease, etc. The doctors at Frontier
Pet Clinic are very fortunate to have received training courses
in performing abdominal ultrasounds during our veterinary schooling
and are proud to offer this as a service to our clients and
patients. We also use the ultrasound machine to detect pregnancies
and look for fetal heartbeats, as well as obtain sterile urine
samples to submit to the lab. It is a very efficient way of
looking into the patient's body in a non-invasive manner.
Specialist Services
Available
We work very closely with board-certified specialists in different
areas, in order to provide your pet with the very best medical
care and options. We offer a board-certified surgeon for major
orthopedic or soft tissue surgeries that a general practitioner
would not feel comfortable doing. We also offer a board-certified
internal medicine specialist for abdominal ultrasounds, consultations
on more challenging cases, or if we want a second opinion on
an ultrasound scan. All of these services are performed right
here in our hospital. The specialists come work with us in our
clinic, for your convenience, so that your pet can have all
of the diagnostic or surgical procedures he/she needs performed
all in one place.
In
House Laboratory
We are pleased to offer a comprehensive in-house laboratory.
We feature the most commonly used IDEXX laboratory equipment,
including a full blood chemistry analyzer, a brand new CBC (complete
blood count) unit, and electrolyte analyzer. We also offer the
SCA 2000 blood clotting time analyzer, which is integral in
diagnosing rat bait poisoning. With this machine, we are able
to get results immediately rather than having to send out the
tests and wait 24 hours for results. We also use the I-STAT
blood gas machine which helps us monitor critical cases such
as animals in a diabetic crisis.
New, Safer Cat Vaccines Now Being Offered
Frontier Pet Clinic offers the safest available feline vaccines
for your pets. Approximately 1 in 1000 cats (this phenomenon
does not occur in dogs) will go on to develop a certain kind
of aggressive deep skin cancer called a vaccine-induced fibrosarcoma,
due to chronic inflammation at a previous vaccine injection
site. These fibrosarcoma tumors are devastating, as they infiltrate
the skin much like an iceberg; what you see on the surface of
the skin is far from being the entire tumor. These tumors send
out little "fingers" of cancer cells into all nearby
tissues, long before a tumor can be seen. Despite doing surgery
with very wide skin margins, the cancer will grow back twice
as quickly and bigger in nearly all cats. Radical treatment
protocols such as leg amputation and radiation therapy have
been used extensively to prolong a patient's survival time,
but most animals will die of the disease regardless of treatment.
Most standard vaccines contain what is called an adjuvant, which
is what the vaccine is mixed with for injection. Research has
now shown that the standard adjuvants can cause very severe
and chronic inflammation in all cats who receive it. Over time,
the molecules in the adjuvant compound (often times an aluminum
base) create an area of inflamed cells that can then mutate
into a cancer. The vaccine-associated fibrosarcomas have been
associated with the feline leukemia and rabies vaccines in cats.
In the past 2 years,
a new form of non-adjuvanted vaccines have been developed
for the feline leukemia and rabies vaccination. The new feline
leukemia vaccine made by Merial is delivered transdermally
(into the very superficial skin layer), where it allows the
body to create antibodies and build good immunity, without
creating a chronic area of inflammation, since there is NO
adjuvant.
Merial also offers a recombinant non-adjuvanted rabies
vaccine given with a needle that has been shown to not cause
any cancer at the injection site either. The rabies vaccine
must be given yearly to maintain efficacy, as opposed to every
3 years for the adjuvant-containing vaccine; however, we feel
that the benefits far outweigh the risks of using the conventional
vaccines. Please ask us about the vaccines when you stop by
and we would be delighted to provide you with an informational
brochure going into more detail!!!
OraVet Dental Health
and Periodontal Disease
OraVet is a Plaque Prevention Gel that creates an invisible
barrier that prevents plaque and tartar-forming bacteria from
attaching to the teeth. You can significantly reduce periodontal
disease in your pet with routine checkups and dental cleaning.
After an initial cleaning, the OraVet gel is applied
once a week, by you at home. It's that simple! Periodontal disease
begins when plaque, a combination of bacteria and food debris,
build up on the tooth surfaces and works its way under the gum
line. Toxins released by the bacteria cause an inflammatory
reaction that can lead to destruction of the tissue and bone
that anchor the teeth in place. When bacteria enters the blood
stream, it can affect the heart, liver and kidneys. Make
an appointment with us today to see if your pet is a good candidate
for a dental cleaning.
Rattlesnake Vaccine
Rattlesnakes live in a variety of habitats and are most active
in warmer seasons -- from spring to autumn. Dogs can encounter
a rattlesnake anytime they are in a rattlesnake habitat and
can easily stumble upon them just as humans do. If you hike,
camp or hunt, the vaccination may be something to consider.
The vaccination stimulates your dog's immunity. Protective
antibodies made by your dog in response to the vaccine start
neutralizing venom immediately. The goal of the vaccine
is not to eliminate treatment but to allow more time to get
your pet to the veterinarian and to possibly reduce the severity
of the reaction. The vaccination is initially given in
two stages and after the first year, a booster is then given
yearly. If you have questions, please call the clinic and any
one of our knowledgeable staff can assist you!

Acupuncture
We have expanded our treatment modalities to include acupressure
and acupuncture. We have had promising results during the last
year in the treatment of degenerative joint disease, aggressiveness,
anxiety, and pain from an old injury. Acupuncture is known to
be useful in a much broader spectrum of disorders, notably as
a support for conventional cancer therapy. Acupuncture treatments
are performed in a special room designed to soothe both the
pet and the owner and are currently done on Monday evenings.
Acupuncture treatment is given by Kamala Dietz, L.Ac. To see
if your pet would benefit from this type of treatment, an initial
exam does need to be performed prior to the first visit. If
you have any questions, please call us at 252-3390.
